Description Claudin-7 is a tight junction protein localized in the mammalian kidney at the junctions between proximal tubule epithelial cells in the nephron. Claudin-7 expression has been observed in normal human and mouse epithelia, as well as in SV40-immortalized human corneal epithelial (THCE) cells. In malignant tissues, down-regulation of claudin-7 has been reported in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. A recent study showed that the loss of claudin-7 protein expression has been observed in ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS), and invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC) of the breast, relative to normal mammary epithelium by immunohistochemical analysis. Loss of claudin-7 is associated with the discohesive architecture characteristic of high-grade lesions, suggesting that the absence of claudin-7 may contribute to metastatic potential in breast cancer.
